A Guide To Corten Steel Fire Pits

You may or may not have heard of corten steel fire pits. It is the preferred material for fire bowls, baskets and fire tables,

making them an essential fire pit to keep you warm at night.

Not only will it be the decorative focal point of your garden, it's low maintenance and you can choose an attractive design,

shape and size to suit you.

What is Corten steel?

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a kind of steel that naturally Withers over time. When exposed to the weather,

it forms a unique and attractive protective layer. This coating prevents further corrosion and keeps the steel underneath in good condition.

The name Corten explained -

COR - corrosion resistant.

TEN - tensile strength

Due to the active elements in the alloy of the steel, a protective layer is formed. When affected by water and oxygen, it is constantly renewed.

It can take up to 12 months of exterior exposure for the rust condition to stabilise.  During this time it can bleed, meaning some rust will run.

off onto the surrounding area which can leave a stain.  However, you can accelerate this process very easily and have the corten look in a matter

of a few weeks.

Avoid placing the fire pit directly on wood or deck, as it will get very hot when lit. Also avoid any light-colored paving slabs or stones, as rust bleeding can occur there. Other surfaces such as gravel or darker colored paving slabs or stones will work better and won't highlight the stain as much, or you can put a steel heat shield under your fire pit to protect the surface underneath.

Why is Corten Steel So Popular?

If you are looking for a low-maintenance and long-lasting wood-burning fire pit, weathering steel fire pits will be the first choice. Due to the naturally formed anti-rust protective layer, they do not require any paint or weatherproof, and the structural strength is not affected.

Corten steel is not only a strong and durable material, its style and simplicity make it a popular choice of material for the fire pit.

From fire-resistant bowls and baskets to fire-resistant tables, there are many options for weather-resistant materials.  Corten fire bowls and baskets come in all shapes and sizes, with some real decorative designs.  Over time, each person develops their own unique layer of rust.

You can choose from different sizes and shapes so you can choose a portable, self-contained fire pit.

Is Corten Steel Environmentally Friendly?

Corten steel is non-toxic.

It is 100% recyclable.

Due to the natural development of the protective rust layer, no anti-corrosion treatment is required.

Corten steel fire pit has a longer service life than ordinary metal fire pit for many years, and its corrosion resistance is 8 times that of ordinary steel.
